PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - The Wood County Commissioners considered three candidates to fill a vacancy on the Wood County Library Board during their meeting Thursday.
Candidates Meryl Clark, Sue Ellen Waybright, and Richard Hayhurst appeared before the commission to state their case for a position on the library board.
Commissioner Jimmy Colombo led the questioning by the commissioners, asking each candidate if they “had an agenda” as they pursued the seat on the board.
In each interview, Colombo talked about complaints the commission has received from the public about books and displays in libraries.
Colombo said it would be important for their chosen board member to handle complaints and voice any concerns they have to the library director.
“We’re sort of concerned about those kinds of complaints, because they hit us with things like that. We are not a regiment that goes in and says, ‘you’ve got to do this, you’ve got to do that.’ Because the board should be able to take that message to the head of the library. And if you can’t take the heat, you shouldn’t be there.”
Commission President Blair Couch said a decision about the library board member won’t be made until next week because a fourth interested person, Chad Conley, was not available for interview on Thursday. Conley previously sought a seat on the Wood County Board of Education in recent primary election in West Virginia.
The commission is responsible for appointing two of the board’s five members.
