Elon Musk-owned X, formerly Twitter, banned 2,30,892 in India between April 26 and May 25 this year. Complying with the new IT Rules, 2021, the microblogging platform released its monthly report where it said that most of these accounts – 2,29,925 were banned for promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity.
The company took down 967 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.
X received 17,580 complaints during the review period
In the report, X said that it received 17,580 complaints from users in India through its grievance redressal mechanisms in the same time frame. The company processed 76 grievances that requested account suspensions.
"We overturned 0 of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended," the company said.
"We received 31 requests related to general questions about accounts during this reporting period," it added.
Layoffs at X soon?
In a recent all-hands meeting, X CEO Linda Yaccarino addressed concerns among the company's employees about potential layoffs and delayed promotions, according to sources who spoke to The Verge. While the meeting may not have provided employees with all the answers they were seeking, Yaccarino assured staff that these all-hands meetings will be held quarterly and that both she and Musk will be communicating with them soon.
