Bad actors seldom miss the chance to deceive internet users and exploit them. The 2024 Paris Olympics is no exception.
Cybersecurity firm McAfee recently released a detailed report on a new, sophisticated scam, which is designed to deceive and discredit the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
"This scam involves sophisticated social engineering techniques, where the scammers aim to deceive. They’ve become more accessible than ever thanks to advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Tools like audio cloning enable scammers to create convincing fake audio messages at a low cost," the report said.
The latest scam involves a fake Amazon Prime series called Olympics has Fallen II: The End of Thomas Bach, narrated by a deepfake version of Elon Musk’s voice.

Released on a Telegram channel on June 24, 2024, the series is said to spread misinformation and exploit public figures to create believable narratives.
McAfee added that this scam follows a similar fake series from last year, which falsely claimed to be a Netflix production featuring a deepfake voice of Tom Cruise.
Within a week of its release, the new series has attracted over 150,000 viewers. The creators also circulated fake endorsements and reviews from reputable publishers to bolster their deception.

The series uses AI voice cloning, image diffusion, and lip-sync techniques to appear professionally made, but glitches and inconsistencies can be easily detected if you pay enough attention.
According to McAfee, Elon Musk’s voice is a common target for scammers. The company's 2023 Hacker Celebrity Hot List ranked him as one of the most frequently mimicked public figures in cryptocurrency scams — not a list that anybody would want to be on, let alone top.
With the Olympics on the horizon, McAfee predicts an increase in scams using AI. Whether attending the games or following from home, it’s essential to stay alert. Avoid unsolicited messages, unfamiliar websites, and verify information from trusted sources.
Be sure to cross-verify information on popular search engines or platforms like Amazon Prime to quickly identify inconsistencies — which is a huge giveaway for AI scams.
Most importantly, if it's on Telegram, think 10 times before trusting the content, clicking on the link, sharing your information or even investing your money.
