Dalaman Dalaman Airport has unveiled the world’s largest solar roof, setting a new standard for renewable energy use in aviation. This innovative project, built on the terminal building’s roof, is a significant leap towards sustainability and showcases Dalaman Airport’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. One of Turkey’s busiest airports, Dalaman Airport has implemented a solar energy system capable of producing 10,230 MWh annually. This project is designed to meet over 55% of the airport’s yearly energy needs, effectively preventing approximately 4,500 tons of CO₂ emissions each year—equivalent to preserving 200,000 trees. The airport’s CEO, Yiğit Laçin, expressed immense pride in leading this eco-friendly initiative, highlighting its importance for future generations. “With the solar power plant project, we aim to meet more than 55 percent of the airport’s annual energy needs with solar energy in the first stage. With our nature-friendly project that we have implemented at our airport, which is a truly living structure that needs electricity at all hours of the day, we will have an installed power of 8,250 kW DC, which is equivalent to the electricity demand of approximately 3,000 households per year. We are very proud to undertake the world’s largest solar power plant project on behalf of our country, which is built on the roof of the airport terminal building,” said Laçin. 5th Busiest Airport for International Passengers Located on Turkey’s scenic Riviera, Dalaman Airport serves over 5.2 million passengers annually, connecting travelers to popular destinations such as Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, and Marmaris. With 15,000 solar panels installed over a 45,000 m² steel structure, this solar roof project not only supports the airport’s energy needs but also contributes to its goal of becoming one of the world’s most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly airports. Innovative Green Initiatives The world’s largest solar power plant built on the roof of a terminal building aligns with Dalaman Airport’s broader sustainability strategy. This includes reducing airplane emissions through collaborative efforts with airlines and ground service providers, transitioning to LED lighting to lower electricity consumption, and replacing airport vehicles with electric alternatives. Additionally, the airport has adopted sensor-based control systems to minimize unnecessary energy use and launched QR code systems to reduce paper waste and enhance passenger experience. By embracing such comprehensive sustainability measures, Dalaman Airport is not only setting an example in the aviation industry but also playing a crucial role in promoting green energy.
