Those craving a second-screen experience for Friday's Green Bay Packers season opener might find some limits with X (or Twitter, as so many of us still prefer), given the decision by Brazilian courts to block the platform's usage within the country.
The Packers travel to São Paulo for the showdown with Philadelphia, getting under way at 7 p.m. CT Friday.
The Associated Press reported Monday that the Brazilian Supreme Court unanimously voted to uphold the decision to block the platform, a decision first handed down by Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
The specific issue centers on the platform's unwillingness to appoint a legal representative inside Brazil, failing to meet a deadline imposed by de Moraes to comply with that aspect of Brazilian law. The broader issue in play is what de Moraes considers the platform's dissemination of disinformation; X has responded that the maneuver represents the censorship of free speech. Fines have been set at the equivalent of $8,900 for companies or individuals attempting to circumvent the ban using virtual private networks, though enforcement logistics of those fines remains unclear.
But it stands to reason journalists covering the Packers-Eagles game will be unable to use the platform to disseminate observations or video from the scene of the game itself.
Packers fans can also follow the PackersNews.com live blog, hosted by writer Tom Silverstein, which will go live shortly before the game and feature commentary from Tom, as well as a community for fans to ask questions and interact. Here's a previous example.
This obviously doesn't mean X will be quiet during the game; brand accounts such as the Packers (or even individuals) can easily direct stateside content creators to post video clips or game reaction, either transferred via text or simply pulled from the game broadcast. And, the vast majority of "Packers Twitter" will be free and clear to react in real-time on American soil.
A Packers spokesman said the team's X account will indeed still be active during the game, controlled primarily by those in the Lambeau Field offices.
