Despite saying that Tesla would ship ASS (Actually Smart Summon) by the end of the month way back in 2022, Elon Musk was proven to be a little wide of the mark.
However, the feature is finally starting to ship on modern FSD V12.5.3 vehicles this week after years of waiting and delays.
The new feature has started to roll out but it’s as-yet unclear whether it will also be available on HW3 vehicles. The feature requires Tesla Vision in order to work, but early tests shown via online videos have so far suggested that it could work well.
The new feature works by using a live feed of the vehicle’s cameras when driving, relaying that to the vehicle’s owner via the Tesla app. That can be hugely beneficial for those who are using the new and improved Smart Summon feature from a place where they can’t actually see their vehicle work its magic.
The theory is, of course, that people will be able to use ASS and have their vehicle remove itself from a parking lot and find them on the street, but we’ll need to see more testing before we can be sure of its real use.
Notably, the software update’s release notes make it abundantly clear that the vehicle’s owner is still responsible should ASS fail miserably, so don’t go blaming Tesla if your new Model 3 runs someone over or drives itself off a bridge.
