According to Reuters, Tesla is exploring the possibility of expanding its Tesla Model Y production in Shanghai to include a 6-seater variant. The company has reportedly communicated this plan to its suppliers, to prepare for a ‘double-digit increase’ in manufacturing capacity.
Tesla plans production of the 6-seater version of the Tesla Model Y in late 2025, cited Reuters. A 5-seater “Juniper” update for the Tesla Model Y is also expected to launch in early 2025, delaying its initial release plans.
In the US, the Tesla Model Y unveiled in 2019, offers an optional third-row seating configuration. While providing up to 152 mm of legroom, the available space may vary depending on the second-row seat position.
The introduction of a 6-seater variant highlights the competitive landscape in the Chinese market, where segment rivals such as the Xpeng G6 and Zeekr 7X are offering similar features at lower prices. In contrast, Tesla’s focus in the US remains on self-driving technology and robotaxi development.
