Almost 10 months after it started deliveries, the Tesla Cybertruck gets its first automated driving feature. Vision Autopark allows owners to let the Cybertruck steer into a parking spot, something other Tesla models have done since March. So far, Vision Autopark is still in limited testing with Tesla influencers but is expected to roll out wide soon.
Tesla has irked many Cybertruck owners because of the lack of driver assistance systems. Tesla fans claim the Cybertruck is "a blast to drive" and doesn't need
FSD
. However, they use every opportunity to ask Elon Musk or other Tesla executives when it will become available. Not having FSD is something many (except those from the die-hard Tesla fan circle) would not mind. However, the fact that the Cybertruck doesn't have any driver assistance system is another story.
This would be even more obvious if the Cybertruck had to undergo a safety assessment with an independent agency. The lack of driver assistance would deny it the
IIHS
's Top Safety Pick accolades. There's at least one instance when the lack of driver assistance systems caused a Cybertruck to crash, unfortunately resulting in the driver's death. If the Cybertruck had a Lane Keep Assist system (or perhaps even a Lane Departure Warning), its driver might still be alive.
Last month, Tesla launched Vision Park Assist on the Cybertruck, a first (but small) step in the right direction. This provides 3D visualizations of the Cybertruck's surroundings that help the driver park in tight spaces. It was not able to park itself, though, something that other Tesla models could do after a series of updates starting in March. This is only now rolling out, starting with the Cybertrucks owned by a small group of Tesla influencers.
The Vision Autopark feature that comes with the 2024.32.5 software update works exactly as it does on other Tesla models. For the first time, select Cybertruck owners have been able to see the Cybertruck's steering wheel turning by itself while the truck finds its way into a parking spot. It's unclear when the update will reach the wider fleet, but it shouldn't be too long.
While Vision Autopark on the Cybertruck sounds cool, some owners wondered why the steering wheel/yoke needed to rotate. Of all Tesla models, the electric pickup truck has a steer-by-wire system. In theory, the yoke could just stand still while the truck steers. For better or worse, Elon Musk acknowledged this and said that Tesla should change it to stay stationary, including when it's on Autopilot/FSD.
While this is something Tesla certainly could do, it's not necessarily something it should. The steering wheel turning provides visual feedback of the vehicle's actions while self-driving. It's also awkward in those not-so-rare moments when the driver must assume control, and the fixed steering wheel might add to the confusion. Imagine you need to straighten the wheels when the truck is going right, but you see the steering wheel is already straight.
We should change that so the yoke is stationary, as it is not mechanically coupled to the wheels. Same goes for when it is on Autopilot.
