In a new patent filing from Tesla, the company’s wireless charging station has been revealed.
Couple of years back, Tesla acquired an EV wireless charging startup to bring this tech to its cars.
While the company has been working on it for a number of years now, the tech has yet to make way to its vehicles. The likely reason it hasn’t been fully materialized yet is efficiency. Wireless charging has traditionally been less efficient than wired charging, but newer technologies, such as magnetic resonance, now claim to achieve similar efficiency rates, around 95%, comparable to cable charging.
Last year, Tesla teased (pictured below) its upcoming wireless charger for the first time during a presentation with investors. Furthermore, its chief designer Franz von Holzhause has also recently confirmed that the company will come up with such a solution for its vehicles soon. The recently launched Cybertruck also has support built into it for this kind of technology.
Despite this, such a tech hasn’t made its way for Tesla vehicle owners yet. Today’s patent filing does reassure us though that the company is still working on bringing this technology to its vehicle owners but when will it actually launch such a product is anybody’s guess at this point.
The patent filings from Tesla for wireless charging EVs have following titles:
SHORTING SWITCH TO REDUCE GROUND LEAKAGE CURRENT IN INDUCTIVE CHARGING
TEMPERATURE SENSORS AND APPLICATIONS IN WIRELESS CHARGING
WIRELESS CHARGING CIRCUIT TOPOLOGY AND RELATED METHODS OF MANUFACTURING
PARAMETER ESTIMATION FOR WIRELESS CHARGING
Tesla has a Robotaxi unveiling event scheduled for next month. Could we see them talking about this tech again at that event? Only time will tell.
