The endorsement came when it would hurt Donald Trump the most: Minutes after his humiliating debate defeat by Vice President Kamala Harris. Pop superstar Taylor Swift knew what she was doing. As MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell said as it dropped, “This is the most important celebrity endorsement that I ever seen. The timing on it is absolutely exquisite, the wording of it is flawless. For someone who’s never been impressed by a celebrity endorsement, this is perfect and powerful.” And, oh, did it sting the Trump campaign and MAGA world, which immediately began attacking the woman with millions of followers, billions of dollars and megatons of influence. After Swift signed her endorsement “Childless Cat Lady,” in a troll of GOP vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, Elon Musk, the Trump supporter who bought and tanked Twitter (now called X), won the award for creepy tweet of the night: “Fine, Taylor ... you win ... I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life,” he tweeted. Musk, of course, has fathered an unknown number of children with an unknown number of women. Rick Wilson, founder of the Lincoln Project, reported that “Taylor Swift is under attack now by the MAGA horde.” He encouraged them: “Please, boys, proceed with that attack. See how it works out for you.” Swift wrote that her endorsement was partially prompted by Trump’s decision to post artificial intelligence-generated pictures suggesting that she had endorsed him. One showed Swift dressed as Uncle Sam, and the text said “Taylor wants YOU to VOTE for DONALD TRUMP.” In other words, MAGA had fooled around and was now finding out. The MAGA attacks — which targeted her past relationships, wondered if she was a paid shill for Democrats, and warned that she would lose all of her GOP fans — were answered with jokes from other Twitter/X accounts.
