Of all the conspiratorial effluent thatâs bubbled forth, unfiltered, from the puerile mind of Elon Musk since his takeover of Twitter in 2022, Sunday nightâs now-deleted tweet on the attempted golf club shooting of Donald Trump is probably the most dangerous.
âAnd no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala [quizzical emoji]â, Musk observed on his digital messaging sewer. Within hours, 26 million had read it; 149,000 had âlikedâ it . Itâs safe to assume there were a few MAGA backwoodsmen and assorted whack-jobs among them.
When other X users objected to the comment, Musk merely doubled down on his message â and demonstrated not just his contrarian nature, but his stupidity.
âNo one has even tried to ⦠is the point Iâm making and no one will,â he said.
No doubt any number of lunatics have been thinking about going after US President Joe Biden and even presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
Step forward the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire, which fantasised about the killing of Harris in a message posted on X just hours before the second attempted assassination attempt of Trump: âAnyone who murders Kamala Harris would be an American hero.â
Thanks to Muskâs comment, many more may be considering it now.

Reports suggest that Joe Biden has already had to limit his public appearances on the advice of his Secret Service bodyguards.
The incumbent is certainly not able to drag himself around a 50-hectare golf course for hours at a time â even if he had the inclination, he has work to do, like dealing with the cost of living crisis, Gaza, the war in Ukraine⦠all the boring stuff that Trump would, presumably, relegate to slots between rounds at his 18-hole course in West Palm Beach.
Biden and Harris, Trumpâs Democratic rival for the 2024 election â which is less than eight weeks away â immediately and rightly deplored the attack. Unlike Musk, they chose not to raise the already febrile political temperature; they didnât remark on how Trumpâs leisure activities, love of the limelight and of course, his hateful verbiage, widen the target on his back.
When a lunatic almost bludgeoned Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosiâs husband to death with a hammer, Trump joked about it. After authorities apprehended a right-wing-extremist plot to abduct the Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Trump laughed.
At least he has the opportunity to disavow the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire.
But the demagoguery â against Haitian immigrants in Springfield and lessons on anti-LGBT prejudice in Florida schools â will go on. And Trumpâs nasty populism has powerful new messengers: the billionaires of Silicon Valley.
Musk has reportedly pledged to support the Trump campaign to the tune of $45m (£34m) a month.
The tech titans used to give us their thoughts on digital currency, AI and space travel. They were always in favour of low-tax government â of course. But now theyâve become culture warriors. They promote racist conspiracies, attack immigration and homeless people. They demonise âwoke cultureâ and new attitudes to gender pronouns as if these were more serious threats than world hunger or nuclear weapons.
Musk thinks the âwoke mind virusâ is an existential danger to the human race.
