Earlier this year, Tesla launched door projection lights for the Model 3 and Model Y in its China Shop. The official puddle lights proved very popular, with many US customers ordering them from China. Now, Tesla has also launched the puddle lights in its online Shop in Canada and the US, making a lot of people happy.
When Tesla's mission was all about saving the planet and advancing electric mobility, it didn't pay much attention to what its customers wanted. Its first customers were its most ardent fans, and they were willing to buy whatever came from Elon Musk's company. However, as Tesla exhausted the pool of deep-pocketed fans and its sales peaked, it started thinking of some features that regular customers might want.
This is why the refreshed Model 3 had ambient lighting as one of the most prominent features. This is such a modest change that doesn't cost almost anything to implement and still significantly impacts customers. If you've been scrolling your X/Facebook/Instagram wall, you've certainly noticed how much people appreciate this feature.
There is a huge demand for car personalization, which is most obvious in China, where people have turned to aftermarket solutions for ambient lighting, puddle lights, and all sorts of lights. At first, Tesla tried to fight this trend, threatening to void the warranty for those who installed aftermarket lighting accessories. However, it later bucked the trend, and the ambient lighting in the refreshed Model 3 was the first step. The second was a mild update to the Model Y in China, which also adopted the Model 3 ambient lighting.
This spring, Tesla launched an OEM projection light accessory for the Model 3 and Model Y in its China online Shop, which proved extremely popular. Many Tesla fans in the US have found ways to order the projection puddle lights from China. Tesla probably noticed this, so it finally expanded the offer to its online Shop in Canada and the US. This, or it used China as a testing ground before launching in more markets, as it has done several times in the past.
The projection lights are available for Model Y and Model 3, including the refreshed model, and cost $65 USD in the US and $90 CAD in Canada. The lights project a high-definition Tesla lettering on the ground whenever the front doors are opened. No official projection light has yet been offered for Model S and Model X, but many owners have been able to install third-party solutions.
Installing the lights is straightforward, as Tesla EVs already have regular puddle lights integrated into the doors. After getting them out using a plastic pry tool, all you have to do is swap the original puddle lights with the new projection lights. The procedure is explained in the Model 3/Y DIY manual, and it takes a couple of minutes for both doors.
