A bit of weather whiplash is in store for the Kansas City area into the weekend. From summer heat to a fall cool-down, and from a long dry stretch to potentially strong storms and heavy rain.
Thursday morning will see scattered storms in the area. Though not all will get them, we are First Warning you that 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. could bring wet weather that disrupts your plans outside. The afternoon sees a break in the rain, and we turn hot with highs in the low 90s. We won’t be far from the record high of 95, and we are miles from the normal high in the upper 70s.
A second round of storms may form from 10 p.m. through midnight, which we are also First Warning you for. This may be a stronger round, bringing potential for isolated hail and severe winds. A briefly rotating storm is not out of the question. Because of this, our area is under a Level 1/5 risk for severe storms. This round will also be isolated, so not all will get hit by it.
Friday will be sunny much of the day and hot once again with highs near 90. Watch for isolated storms after 10 p.m., though. This will be the best day for the Plaza Art Fair, an event that can see as many as a quarter million visitors (and has seen rain many times in recent years).
The weekend is the main event, and it looks wet at times. Of the two days, Saturday hold more promise for events outdoors. While rain is possible at any point in the day, it currently looks scattered and off/on. This may allow for many dry hours.
Saturday night through Sunday morning brings more widespread, persistent, and possibly heavy rain. While Sunday may work in a few dry slots here and there, the day is looking generally wet. This does include the evening, so Chiefs watch parties could be restricted to indoors.
This may be quite a healthy rain event, with computer projections ranging from 1-3″ of total rainfall. This is needed, as we have been in a rain deficit this month.
Sunday also marks the start to fall, and it will appropriately cool off to the refreshing 70s as we head into the first week of the new season.
