Elon Musk and the companies he runs have been on the receiving end of countless lawsuits over the years, and we can add another one to the pile courtesy of a fairly unexpected source: Cards Against Humanity.
It’s been more than a decade since Cards Against Humanity burst onto the scene in the wake of a successful Kickstarter campaign, and the folks behind what was marketed as a “party game for horrible people” found themselves with a hit on their hands after the laughably crude version of Apples to Apples quickly took the world by storm.
Cards Against Humanity prides itself on the political incorrectness that serves as the foundation of the card game, but its creators haven’t been shy about entering the political realm while using some of the proceeds from what by all accounts is a pretty massive cash cow to finance a number of stunts that have largely been in support of left-leaning causes.
That includes the campaign they orchestrated in 2017 by offering gifts to people who donated $15 to help them purchase a parcel of land near Brownsville, Texas on the border of Mexico in an admittedly futile and largely symbolic attempt to interfere with the construction of the wall Donald Trump had vowed to build.
It also retained a law firm specializing in eminent domain while pledging to make life as difficult as possible for the federal government if it attempted to reclaim the property, and while the land is still in the company’s possession, it has nonetheless ended up at the center of court case after Cards Against Humanity filed a lawsuit against SpaceX.
Accordng to Ars Technica, the filing asserts SpaceX “invaded” the property that is surrounded by a fence and marked with a “No Trespassing” sign and contains photos of the lot filled with construction equipment and materials being used for the development of other lots the extraterrestrial-focused organization has purchased in recent years (Brownsville is adjacent to the Boca Chica “Starbase” that was christened when its Starship launched—and subsequently—exploded in 2023).
Cards Against Humanity is seeking upwards of $15 million while citing the cost to restore the land it had paid to maintain, the loss of property value, and the unpaid compensation it says SpaceX owes it for using the lot without its permission.
