Iain Ashton, a bus driver from London, purchased a Tesla Model 3 from a salvage yard. He powered it up and discovered shocking footage that explained how it ended up like that. Most likely, this was just another case of pedal misapplication despite many believing that it was just the car to blame.
The video shows the woman, presumably the former owner, opening the driver's door and getting behind the wheel. However, she has no time to close the door before the car starts driving and accelerating.
The footage shows the car crossing two lanes, striking a plastic bollard, driving straight onto the sidewalk, and almost running over a pedestrian. The Model 3 stops right after it slams into an electrical box. The incident left the whole street without an internet connection, and the female driver in shock after the ride against her will. Luckily, she wasn't hurt, and no other vehicle was involved in the incident.
The pedestrian her car passed inches away from was the one who helped her out of the Tesla. At first, we might all be tempted to say that the high-tech Tesla Model 3 simply went crazy and caused the chaos by itself.
However, this controversal incident can't be just that. At least, not outside the US, anyway. A more credible alternative to this scenario would be the female driver might have accidentally put the car in Drive and stepped on the accelerator the moment she got on board instead of pressing the brake pedal. The car started off with the driver's door open, taking her by surprise and mowing down everything that came its way. She panicked due to the sudden acceleration and failed to press the brake.
The brakes should have been able to bring the vehicle to a stop, no matter if the drivetrain was out of control. But that was if the woman got to press the brake pedal. None of the systems of the car, not even those of a Tesla, can override the braking system.
The one who purchased the Tesla Model 3 involved in the crash had been looking for one with a blue paint job over a white interior for a long time. He had been saving money for around two years when he saw it auctioned off.
He was the one who placed the winning bid and took it home after paying 8,100 pounds, which is the equivalent of $10,800. Fixing the Tesla with a deformed hood, bumper, door, and a ripped off front fender cost him about 1,300 pounds ($1,732).
When the fix was completed, he realized the screen was locked, and he needed a PIN code to unlock it. He googled the world's most used PINs and nailed it on his 158th attempt. That was when he found the footage of the the crash that his new car had been involved in.
