The rocket industry just got a little more competitive as Blue Origin fired its New Glenn rocket. The launch vehicle underwent a test fire on September 24 at the rocket factory in Florida ahead of its much-awaited debut in November.
Blue Origin announced the successful completion of the 15-second test of the rocket's second stage. It marked the first time the vehicle operated as an integrated system.

"The purpose of the hotfire test was to validate interactions between the subsystems on the second stage, its two BE-3U engines, and the ground control systems," the company said in a statement.
New Glenn, named after the first American to reach space - John Glenn, is a two-stage rocket. The booster being the first stage and the upper stage being the second.

If all goes well down the road, New Glenn might be a strong rival to Elon Musk's SpaceX. Like SpaceX's Falcon rockets, New Glenn is designed to be reusable, meaning its booster can be used in multiple missions.
