The parents have spoken: The best cars for family life are practical, spacious, safe and fuel efficient. A new BabyCenter poll, released Tuesday, named its first “Best Car Awards” and identified top cars for families, including the best EV and hybrid.
BabyCenter, the parenting and pregnancy resource and app, surveyed 494 U.S.-based parents ages 18 to 54 who drive a 1999 model year vehicle or newer. After rating their drive choices, the best cars were determined.
The best all-electric was the Tesla Model Y. The electric SUV starts at $44,990 for the long-range (320 miles on a single charge) rear-wheel drive version and comes with a optional third row. BabyCenter found this was the most-driven and highest-rated EV among those polled, but only 3% of respondents drive an EV.
The Model Y is a fan favorite beyond families. In the U.S. (and world) it’s the top-selling EV. But it hits many family needs, mainly, trunk and storage space and gas savings. With a front trunk (known as a frunk) and 12.8 cubic-feet of cargo room behind a third row, the Model Y works for stroller- and car seat-laden parents. Without the third row, parents are working with 26.6 cubes for stowing all their stuff. More than 30% of parents said a third-row of seats was their number one feature beyond the overall top requirement of safety.
With an optional third row, the Model Y can fit even more children.
