Range and charging
The EPA rates Polestar 3 range at 279 to 315 miles, depending on power output, wheels and other equipment.
It’s 111 kWh battery can accept DC fast charging at up to 250 kW. Under ideal conditions, that will take the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
The 240-volt charging most EV owners use for daily charging will top the battery up in 10 hours.
All those figures compare well to other EVs. The Polestar 3’s range and charging should make for pleasant everyday driving and longer trips.
What should be better?
The Polestar 3 occasionally works a little too hard in search of minimalism, if you can get your head around that concept. The desire for a clean, simple looking interior led to the creation of a some overly elaborate and complicated controls.
The key offenders are the center touch screen, which can sends you into submenus for tasks as simple as opening the glove box. The approach also makes it unnecessarily difficult to adjust the side mirrors, steering column and other features while driving.
In Polestar’s defense, those settings — and more — can be linked to each driver’s profile. Contrariwise, it’s foolish to assume only regular drivers will pilot the vehicle during its decade-plus life.
The most ostentatious sin in the name of simplicity, though, are the driver’s controls for the vehicle’s four power windows. Nearly every vehicle in existence provides four toggles — one for each window.
Polestar’s design eliminates a grand total of one switch, but the result is that the driver must locate a seldom used touch point on the armrest to convert the other two main switches from controlling the front windows to operating the rear. And find it again to work the front windows. Puh-lease.
The Polestar 3’s full-length sun roof does not come with a standard sun shade. The tinted glass reduces glare and heat, but not as much as a physical shade would.
The Polestar 3's battery will not initially qualify for full federal tax credits, a drawback the automaker is working to remedy.
Why get a Polestar 3?
The Polestar 3 deserves a look for anybody in the market for a luxury or performance SUV. Involving and fun to drive, its battery and charging system also provide competitive range and charging times.
Prices are higher than some mainstream sporty EVs, but the Polestar stacks up particularly well against sporty electric EVs from other European-based luxury brands.
