The last time Tesla attended the Paris Motor Show was in 2018 when it launched the Model 3. Six years later, Tesla is again at the Porte de Versailles, this time with the Cybertruck and the Optimus humanoid robot. As the EV market slows down in North America, carmakers across the globe prepare for a bloody battle for the European EV market.
Although many traditional carmakers have noticed sales of electric vehicles have cooled down, many people are willing to replace their gas-powered cars with an
EV
. However, the appetite for expensive, luxury electric cars has decreased substantially, and there's a shortage of compelling models in the lower echelons of the market.
The main cause for this self-inflicted wound is that most carmakers lose money on their EV business, and launching cheaper models would hurt them even more. This is why pretending that the market doesn't like EVs anymore is comfortable for now. However, the times are not standing still because most carmakers are putting their EV plans on hold. There are younger, aggressive companies coming from China that see this as an opportunity. Recently announced tariffs will not deter them from their plans to sweep the market.
With the Chinese market already taken care of, Europe is projected to become the next battleground between Western carmakers and those from China. This is why the European market, once considered less important, is heating up. That's why European auto shows, once almost extinct, have been swamped by Chinese carmakers trying to set foot on the Old Continent. This led to a resurgence of local motor shows, the most important being the alternating events in Paris and (currently) Munich.
This year's Paris Motor Show is projected to be more animated than it has been in the post-pandemic years. Besides the French carmakers, which naturally use their home event to showcase their newest models, Germany, the US, and Asia are sending their best. The biggest surprise is not Cadillac, which will have the Lyriq on display, but Tesla, which has avoided European auto shows in the past few years.
The last time Tesla attended the Paris Motor Show was in 2018 when it launched the Model 3. Alongside the Model 3, Tesla also presented the Model S and Model X, as well as the Powerwall home battery system. This year, Tesla doesn't have a new model to show besides the Cybertruck, which is not being sold in Europe. The Model 3 Highland is already one year old, and the refreshed Model Y is yet to be unveiled.
Tesla promised that its entire EV lineup, including the Cybertruck, would be on display at the Porte de Versailles. The Semi may also be moved from Hannover, where it attended the IAA Transportation earlier this month. However, the highlight of the Tesla stand will be a robot, not its electric vehicles. The second generation of Tesla humanoid robot Optimus will again greet people in France after it debuted in May at Vivatech Paris 2024.
