Space enthusiasts and skywatchers are gearing up for a spectacular night as SpaceX is set to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base on the evening of Tuesday, September 24.
The rocket is scheduled for lift-off from south base’s Space Launch Complex 4 East, with a launch window opening first at 8:48 p.m. and again at 8:59 p.m., carrying a payload of several Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit.
Although the launch will take place after sunset, making the event visible over a wide expanse, it is anticipated that the timing will be too late in the evening for the exhaust plume to be illuminated by the Sun. Such a night-time launch offers a unique viewing experience for those within sight of the base.
In support of this mission, Vandenberg’s Guardians and Airmen are all set to facilitate this SpaceX Falcon 9 liftoff. The Starlink project, spearheaded by SpaceX, aims to provide global broadband coverage through a constellation of satellites in low-Earth orbit.
As is routine with space launches, after the first stage of the Falcon 9 has done its job propelling the payload towards orbit, it will separate and make a controlled descent to land on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship, strategically positioned in the Pacific Ocean.
Those interested in witnessing the event are advised to watch for updates, as all launch dates and times are subject to change depending on mission requirements. Whether viewed from near or far, the night launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 promises to be a memorable spectacle for all who watch the skies.
Broadcast of the launch is available here.
