After multiple delays, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission will finally launch two astronauts into space on Saturday from Cape Canaveral. The mission is set to take off at 1:17 p.m. on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, carrying NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to the International Space Station. If needed, a backup opportunity is available on Sunday at 12:54 p.m.Meet the crewNASA astronaut Nick Hague will serve as the commander of the mission. He has been a NASA astronaut since 2013, has a background in astronautical engineering, and has completed a mission to the International Space Station. Aleksandr Gorbunov is a cosmonaut from Russia and will serve as the mission specialist. The launch was initially scheduled for August as a four-crew mission. However, plans changed after two astronauts from a different mission became stranded in space earlier this year. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams took off on June 5 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to test the Starliner spacecraft and its subsystems before NASA could certify the spacecraft for rotational missions. However, the Starliner capsule encountered many technical difficulties, including helium leaks, which delayed the pair's return to Earth multiple times before being put on hold indefinitely. As a result, NASA decided to use SpaceX's Crew-9 mission to rescue both astronauts from the ISS. This forced them to cut two crew members from the mission to make space for Wilmore and Williams.
