A Florida garage fire erupted when a Tesla, an electric vehicle, burst into flames three days after Hurricane Helene swept by the Gulf Coast, pushing surge waters onto land and into homes.
Video captured on the homeowner's system — at the top of this story — shows the Model X Plaid become engulfed in fire on Sunday, Sept. 29 in a Siesta Key garage.
In the hours before Hurricane Helene made landfall on Florida's Big Bend coastline Thursday as a Category 4 storm, with 140-mph winds, the massive system roiled the Gulf of Mexico and sent destructive storm surge into coastal communities from Southwest Florida to north of Tampa Bay.
The car was in the garage of the Hodges family. They were asleep when two of their grandchildren awakened to strange popping noises. The family ran downstairs to see the Tesla on fire. They got out of the house safely as the car was consumed quickly by flames.
"I'm just glad we're alive, but everything, we've been married 38 years and everything we put into that house," Lisa Hodges told Reuters. "We built it for our family and it's all gone.'
Officials said the car's battery is believed to have exploded and set alight after coming into contact with salt water from the recent hurricane.
South of there, in Naples, on the day Helene passed, police there found a burning Tesla in a foot of storm surge water in the municipal parking garage.
