The Tesla Cybertruck is a bit like an outspoken celebrity. For some, the low-res electric truck can do no wrong. For others, it’s a bit of an eyesore. Unfortunately for the former and the video game-esque EV’s corps of owners, a recent Tesle Cybertruck recall outlines 27,185 units for safety concerns related to rear camera functionality.
The recent Tesla Cybertruck recall cites a faulty rear camera that could ‘increase the chance of a crash’
If you own a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck, you might want to check your recall status. A recent recall named 27,185 MY2024 Cybertrucks for a rear camera fault and a “delayed rearview image,” per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Specifically, the recall states that “the rearview camera image may be delayed after shifting into reverse” on impacted Cybertrucks. While that doesn’t sound too dangerous, it’s a failure to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) requirements for “rear visibility.”
That, and the rear camera is of special importance aboard the jagged electric pickup truck. One of the sacrifices of the Cybertruck’s mold-breaking styling is its rear visibility without the assistance of a camera. The rear tonneau cover, when closed, obscures rearward visibility. Incidentally, Cybertruck drivers rely heavily on the EV’s rear camera for reversing.
According to the NHTSA, the recall arrives as the latest safety concern for the Tesla Cybertruck. The agency detailed a recall notice for the truck’s bed trim in June, citing a likelihood of detaching and increasing the chance of a crash.
Moreover, some Cybertrucks exhibited a “trapped pedal” event, leading to unintentional acceleration. As you might imagine, a runaway 6,669-lb Cybertruck Dual Motor with 600 horsepower accelerating out-of-control isn’t a good thing for anyone. Fortunately, as with all recalls, Tesla will repair the recall free of charge. The same goes with affected Cybertrucks and their rear cameras.
