SOUTHBOROUGH ― Have you seen it? A bright chromatic gold Tesla Cybertruck has been spotted across Central Massachusetts, prompting a frenzy of questions on social media as to who owns it, and why is it gold?
It's one of more than 27,000 Cybertruck vehicles sold in the United States since the Tesla vehicle was unveiled in November.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk famously unveiled the Cybertruck with lead designer Franz Von Holzhausen, who then smashed two of the vehicles' "armor glass" windows with a metal ball. The window breaking wasn't part of the plan, but Musk clarified later that the glass only broke because they had already hit the door with a sledgehammer, and that was what caused the glass to crack initially.
"The moment he broke the window, I reserved one," said Dr. Kumait Jaroje, owner of the gold Cybertruck. "And the gold? Well gold is everything. It keeps its quality, value — it just represents my passion. That same quality, that same notion goes into my business here, making humans feel like gold, beautiful and valued."
Since November, there have been five recalls impacting the vehicle, the most recent was announced on Oct. 3, impacting the rear-camera feed. Other recalls have involved faulty wipers, jammed accelerator pedals, and loose trim.
Jaroje owns Sculpting MD in Southborough and purchased the Cybertruck as a company car. A QR code for his business is displayed across the back bumper. Stepping into the glamorous office, with black and gold décor, it's easy to see why he chose to wrap the vehicle in chrome gold.
Sculpting MD specializes in medical beauty treatments including liposuction, laser skin treatments, hair transplants and facial treatments, to name a few. Right now, it's booked out for roughly two months.
Jaroje's vehicle starting price was about $69,000, but the total ended up being closer to $100,000 with its added features. As for the ongoing recalls, Jaroje said only one had impacted his vehicle, adding the fix was easy and convenient.
"At first I wanted to buy a Silverado, but the dealer wouldn't budge on the price," he said with a laugh, adding he needed a truck to carry supplies and equipment for his businesses. The vehicle was delivered in April and since then, he said, he's seen an uptick in visits to his website.
"When I was a little kid, I was 'fluffy' — you know, bigger than the other kids. I wore big glasses and was often teased," Jaroje said. "I've been fascinated with liposuction since high school. When I became a doctor, it really became a dream of mine to focus on the treatment and change people's lives, to give them confidence."
Sculpting MD offers VASER liposuction, which uses an ultrasonic technology that is "tissue-selective," meaning it only targets the unwanted fat rather than any surrounding tissues. Using this technique, patients are able to remain awake for the procedure, have a quicker recovery time and avoid any complications from being sedated.
"Believe it or not when I first came to this country in 2010, I delivered pizzas," said Jaroje, who immigrated to the United States from Syria. "It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but having a patient tell me, 'Doctor, you changed my life,' well, that makes it worth it."
Jaroje, who is affiliated with both Saint Vincent Hospital and MetroWest Medical Center, also works in real estate and owns several rental properties. Now, he's slowly becoming known as the guy with the gold Cybertruck.
Kathleen Casamento, owner of Allure Medical Aesthetics, walked through the Sculpting MD door with a huge smile on her face. It was the first time she'd seen the truck in person.
"Oh my God! I wanna see you in that thing," she said excitedly. "I have never seen that color before."
It's the color that's really making a splash on the internet — it's been compared to shiny Polaris glasses, gold coins in a video game, and the color of urine.
"I saw the memes about the truck on social media," aesthetician and social media influencer Jesenia Rodriguez said. "When he first told me he'd ordered one, I was like, 'There is no way,' but then it got delivered."
"He let me try it out and let me tell you, everyone turns their head to look at you when you drive by," she said. "When the sun is shining, the gold color reflects off the other cars as you drive, it's really cool."
"Some people aren't going to like the color, the shape, the brand," Jaroje said. "But that's OK, because I like it."
In downtown Worcester, Venture X owner and president Brandon Wolanski received his Cybertruck in August. He, too, decided to get the vehicle wrapped by Signarama on Grove Street, showcasing the Venture X logo.
Venture X offers upscale coworking options for businesses near and far. Right now, they're at about half-capacity, with roughly 30 clients renting office space.
Wolanski said it made sense to purchase a futuristic vehicle for the business, which has the motto "the future of workspace."
"If you like to be seen, it's a great car," Wolanski said.
"For us, it's a great marketing tool, a billboard. Everyone wants to see it and take a ride in it."
For Wolanski, it's his daily drive. He said his three children absolutely love the tablet built into the back seat, ready to stream their favorite TV shows and movies.
The Cybertruck was recently showcased in the Spirit of Shrewsbury Festival and took part in the annual parade.
"There are really two types of reactions, and I'd say it's about 90% positive, 10% negative," he said, adding Venture X has seen an uptick in business since purchasing the vehicle.
Next, he said they'll be adding a QR code to the car, just like Jaroje's gold model.
