Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, have been stuck in space for four months, far longer than originally planned.
The pair arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on June 6 aboard the Boeing Starliner to test the spacecraft's performance, including its control systems and thrusters. However, the mission, initially expected to last just one week, encountered multiple issues.
The mission aimed at launching and returning humans to and from space. Despite the tests, the spacecraft returned to Earth empty in early September, leaving the astronauts stranded.
On September 29, SpaceX launched a rescue mission with its Crew Dragon spacecraft, which successfully docked at the ISS the next day.
What began as a week-long mission has now stretched to months, with another five months required before it is completed.
