CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Milton, which was holding as a Category 5 hurricane, will make landfall on the Gulf Coast of Florida late Wednesday.
Live 5 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Bill Walsh said the biggest impact for the Lowcountry, based on current computer models, will be high tides and tidal flooding caused by onshore winds on Thursday afternoon and overnight into early Friday morning. Tides of up to 8.2 feet are expected which can cause major flooding in low-lying areas.
The Lowcountry can also expect low-end wind effects and rainfall. Most tropical-storm-force winds above 39 mph will be along the coastal waters, he said.
Milton quickly intensified into a Category 5 hurricane Monday before losing some steam on Tuesday. Central pressure in the eye of Hurricane Milton fell to a near-record low Monday night. The National Hurricane Center says the storm poses an “extremely serious threat” to Florida.

Hurricane Milton remained a Category 5 storm in the Gulf of Mexico. It is now expected to be a dangerous Category 4 storm when it makes landfall on the west coast of the Florida Peninsula.
(Live 5)
At 11 p.m., the eye of Hurricane Milton was located near latitude 23.4 North, longitude 86.5 West, about 405 miles southwest of Tampa.
Milton is moving toward the northeast near 12 mph. A northeastward
motion with some increase in forward speed is expected overnight through Wednesday.
A turn toward the east-northeast and east is expected on Thursday and Friday. On the forecast track, the center of Milton will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico Tuesday night and Wednesday, make landfall along the west-central coast of Florida Wednesday night, and move off the east coast of Florida over the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 160 mph with higher gusts. Milton is a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Fluctuations in intensity are likely while Milton moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but Milton is expected to be a dangerous major hurricane when it reaches the west-central coast of Florida Wednesday night.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.
The minimum central pressure estimated from Hurricane Hunter aircraft observations is 915 mb or 27.02 inches.
Live 5 News First Alert Traffic Anchor Abbey Walton said Floridians could be seen early Tuesday stuck in traffic as they work to evacuate ahead of the storm.
