BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WRAL) - A North Carolina community has been in mourning since Hurricane Helene killed 11 members of a prominent family.
The area around Garren Creek is unrecognizable physically and now figuratively.
Sam Runion is a close family friend of the Craigs. He’s still trying to unpack how this all happened.
“It’s a complete loss for the community,” Runion remarked.
Rockslides and flooding were part of the devastation, but Runion believes the Craigs weren’t important just because they were so large, but because they were larger than life.
“They call it ‘Craigtown’ because the Craigs are there,” Runion said. “It’s kind of a country thing, I guess, but they’re just pillars of the community.”
They were pillars who were much more than just passive members of their neighborhood.
“They would do anything for you,” Runion said. They really do have servants' hearts. That’s the best way I could put it. They would be more uncomfortable around you for you to feel better and they were just loving people.”
Runion says there are even more members of the Craig family still living in the area, so he believes their legacy as a pillar of the community will continue for generations.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with rebuilding homes, funeral armaments and medical expenses.
