BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - For the second time in exactly five months, a rare, once-in-a-lifetime event took place across South Mississippi skies Thursday night.
The northern lights were visible all the way down to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

It is all due to an intense geomagnetic storm caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun pointed directly at earth.
Energy from the CME interacts with the earth’s magnetic field, converting this energy into light which causes the phenomenon known as the Aurora Borealis in the northern hemisphere, Auroa Australis in the southern hemisphere. Or, quite simply, the northern lights in the northern hemisphere.
The Space Weather Prediction Center issued an alert about the geomagnetic storm.
UPDATE! CME passage intensified; things are favorable for G4 levels to potentially continue into night hours. Keep space weather aware at https://t.co/YLUbTRM02y for the latest. It is incredibly rare for the northern lights to be seen as far south as South Mississippi.
Only the strongest geomagnetic storms cause this.
However, on May 10th of this year, an intense geomagnetic storm, rated a rare G5 by the Space Weather Prediction Center caused the northern lights to be visible in South Mississippi.
