As Americans look to explore new destinations around the holiday period, United Airlines is set to expand its international reach and will add eight new destinations to its summer schedule. This expansion marks the airline's largest international growth initiative to date, with plans for over 760 weekly flights and several new routes.
Starting from May next year, travellers flying out of Newark, New Jersey, will have the opportunity to visit new locations such as Bilbao, Spain; Faro, Portugal; and Palermo, Italy. Additionally, in June, United will introduce flights from Newark to Madeira Island, Portugal, and Nuuk, Greenland.
Other new routes will include service from Tokyo to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and from Washington, D.C. to Dakar, with a further addition of flights from Tokyo to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, commencing in July. The airline will also introduce new connections to existing destinations, including flights from Washington, D.C. to Nice, France, and Venice, Italy, as well as Tokyo to Narita-Koror, Palau. Furthermore, United will resume services to destinations such as Newark to Athens, Greece, in March and Newark to Dubrovnik, Croatia, in May. All new flights are contingent on government approval and will be available for booking through United's website and mobile app. On Friday, United Airlines announced its plan to provide complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi through Starlink, the satellite service from Elon Musk’s SpaceX, marking the largest internet deal yet for the satellite provider.
This collaboration comes as airlines increasingly invest in faster in-flight Wi-Fi, often offering it at no charge to attract high-paying customers, particularly business travelers. Earlier in 2023, Delta Air Lines revealed that it would offer free onboard internet to members of its SkyMiles loyalty program, while Hawaiian Airlines, which also partners with Starlink, provides complimentary Wi-Fi. JetBlue Airways has been offering free Wi-Fi for several years now. SpaceX has previously partnered with the semi-private airline JSX as well.
Currently, United Airlines utilizes a variety of providers for in-flight internet, including ViaSat and Panasonic, charging loyalty members $8 and others $10 for access on domestic and short-haul international flights. The airline anticipates outfitting over 1,000 planes with Starlink over the "next several years," with the first passenger flights featuring this service set to begin early next year. United emphasizes that the Wi-Fi will deliver "gate-to-gate" connectivity.
