Never Trumper roasts MAGA cheerleader — and wounded Trump campaign musters only lame comeback

For reasons that still mystify many of CNN’s viewers, Scott Jennings has a job as a Donald Trump apologist on the cable network, which insists on putting him on the air despite — or because he possesses — the three mainstay qualities of almost all MAGA members: Lies, whataboutism and a denial of history.
So, Sarah Longwell — a Never Trumper and publisher of The Bulwark who has worked to free former fellow Republicans from the Trump Cult while helping to elect Vice President Kamala Harris — reminded Twitter/X users that Jennings, the GOP political operative who now marches at the front of the MAGA parade, once forcefully denied and decried Trump — like most once-mainstream Republicans.
Longwell posted a video of Jennings speaking on CNN hours after the insurrection on Jan. 6, with the comment, “Sometimes it’s fun to go back and look at what the current Trump apologists said about Trump in the aftermath of January 6th. Like this gem from [ScottJennings]. Good reminder of why no one should take them seriously today.”
Here’s what Jennings said in the clip when asked by CNN host Anderson Cooper on the night of Jan. 6 if Trump should remain in office any longer:
“Well, I’ve been wrestling with this question all day. I mean, he’s clearly violated his oath of office to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution ‘to the best of my ability.’ And no one could, with a straight face, argue that he is preserving, protecting or defending it. In fact, it’s the opposite of defending it. It’s under attack. And so he’s certainly not doing any of that to the best of his ability. So if you wanted to strictly look at his oath, he’s violated it.
“You probably make an argument he violated it this weekend, when he called the Georgia secretary of state as well, which seems like a lifetime ago. I don’t know the answer. I know that there are things being discussed. I don’t know what the right thing to do is tonight. He doesn’t seem like to me, based on the tweets that were removed, that he learned any lesson after this got out of hand today. This is what you get when you steal an election in learn anything when this happened today? And so if that’s going to be his attitude for the next two weeks, I’m very fearful of what other insurrection type activities.”
It’s here that Jennings grows angry and animated:
“And that’s exactly what it was,” he adds. “It was an insurrection and and it should be labeled as such. I can’t believe more people haven’t been arrested for storming the capital of the United States. And I can’t, frankly, believe there are still Republicans tonight siding with the people who stormed the Capitol by voting for these objections, siding with the people who are wearing animal pelts and horns and scaling down the walls of the U.S. Senate. It’s absurd, and it’s a stain on this President, on our party, on our country. And I cannot believe what I saw on my television today and had to explain to my children at home.”
Longwell’s reminder obviously hit a nerve, because Chris LaCivita, who runs Trump’s campaign, responded on Twitter/X with the lame comeback: “I’m sorry … who are you again?”
Never mind that LaCivita knows — because ... a) he follows Longwell on Twitter/X; b) Longwell has been lobbing stink bombs at the Trump campaign for years; and c) both grew up in the pre-Trump GOP.
Bill Kristol, conservative commentator and chairman of defendingdemocracytogether.org, wondered if LaCivita was feeling wounded in the soul.
What makes [LaCivita], who’s had a successful and lucrative career in American politics, choose to lash out at in such a gratuitous and petty way at [Sarah Longwell]?” Kristiol asked. “Does Chris wake up at night unable to suppress the knowledge that Sarah is doing the right thing, and he’s not?”
