(CNN) - Winter is not here yet, but climate experts are already predicting that this year will feel a lot different than last year’s season.
That’s because La Niña is expected to dominate.
The climate pattern is marked by cooler-than-average ocean temperatures which could bring more precipitation than normal in some parts of the country.
But more precipitation doesn’t guarantee there will be more snow.
The season is expected to be warmer than normal across the Southern half of the U.S. and much of the East Coast. That means some winter storms could end up bringing with them more rain than snow.
Meanwhile, the combination of wetter and cooler-than-normal conditions could mean more snow for the Pacific Northwest.
According to the Climate Prediction Center, La Niña will likely develop by November. Once it arrives, it will likely persist into early spring of next year.
