CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - UVA Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tony Bennett will announce his immediate retirement on Friday, October 18, according to an X.com post Thursday afternoon.

Bennett has spent 15 seasons with UVA basketball, guiding the team to one NCAA championship, two ACC tournament titles and six ACC regular-season championships.
Earlier this year, Bennett signed a contract extension that would have kept him in Charlottesville through April of 2030.

“Tony Bennett is foundational to our efforts to compete for championships in this new model of college athletics,” UVA Athletic Director Carla Williams said at the time of his contract renewal in June.
The announcement came as a surprise to many, especially considering Bennett’s talk last week of his long-term team-building plan at UVA.
