A police force has faced backlash for using electric Tesla vehicles as patrol cars as people scrutinise its safety measures.
California Police departments made the controversial decision as part of a new green initiative. It comes as California Governor Gavin Newsom is aiming for all vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035. However, the change hasn't been smooth sailing with concerns including timing issues when the vehicle needs to charge, whilst a suspect is in the car. The Menlo Park Police Department purchased three Tesla Model Y cars for around $50,000 per vehicle (£38,349.25).
Police chief David Norris has addressed the potential issues that could arise from using the flash vehicles and admitted that these are not the âpatrol cars of the future.â In a published city council report, Menlo authorities claim that officers âappreciated the acceleration, steering, and vehicle speed" but that there are issues concerning off-roading due to the autopilot safety not letting the police ride on curbs when needed.
