VILLA PARK, Ill. (WIFR) - Guilford’s historic flag football season came to an end on Saturday, falling to Fremd 24-12 in the State Championship game.
The two teams were tied at 6 heading into the second half, but Fremd‘s offense found a new level coming out of the break — scoring 18 second half points. The two teams were close in total yards in the game, but Fremd’s 3 sacks and 2 interceptions to Guilford’s zero proved to be the difference.
While a second place finish isn‘t how Guilford wanted to end their year, they still made plenty of history in the sport’s inaugural IHSA season. No team in the state had a better record than Guilford’s 21-1 finish. Head Coach Greg Taylor made sure to remind his team of that after the game.
“I let them know that I’m proud of them,” Taylor said. “They had nothing to hang their head about. They are the only one loss team in the state. They played their hearts out, they made history today. It hurt, but not just for me, I feel the pain for them. They worked so hard for this, but you can only have one win in the championship, and they did their best.”
