Most of that time is spent with Anora, or âAniâ as she likes to be called. She dances at a sleazy New York City strip club and occasionally moonlights in sex work for men who enjoy âmaking it rainâ while she writhes in faux pleasure.
One fateful night, she meets Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), a scatterbrained and clearly immature 23-year-old Russian man. Heâs loaded with money. Ani speaks credible Russian, though she would not consider herself fluent. This is why sheâs assigned to Ivanâs rowdy group.
Ivan becomes infatuated with Ani and buys her time for an entire week filled with sex and shopping. As he wines and dines her, Ani becomes bewitched by his charms. The magic leads to a quickie wedding in Las Vegas and scenes of marital bliss as they shack up in an enormous piece of real estate.
Now, I know what youâre thinking: Rich guy woos sex worker, wines and dines her, and then they fall in love â this sounds like âPretty Woman.â And indeed, one of the critic quotes youâll seen in the trailer says that âAnoraâ âmakes âPretty Womanâ look like a Disney movie.â
Never mind that âPretty Womanâ already is a Disney movie. âAnoraâ aims to be a grittier version of the Richard Gere-Julia Roberts fairy tale, and thatâs where the problems started for me. I didnât believe for one minute that the tough, streetwise Ani was in love with this dopey manchild, yet the movie forces her to act as if she is because itâs too skittish to acknowledge that, at best, this is a union of financial convenience for its heroine.
