GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - Mesa County and the Grand Junction Police Department are bringing awareness to National Pedestrian Safety Month.
Pedestrian Safety Month is recognized every October.
An officer with the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) stated that a majority of fatal or bodily injury crashes have to do with vehicles versus pedestrians.
Some tips to prevent crashes include using designated crosswalks and always using caution when crossing.
Kevin Bavor, a Traffc Officer with the GJPD, said “The main thing that I see a lot of the time, is honestly the pedestrians; they‘re going out or they could even be in a crosswalk, but they are just not waiting for the pedestrian crosswalk signal. And then as a driver, I want to also caution you as well. Look twelve seconds ahead of you and look further down the road. Don’t just look at the traffic signal lights and then be distracted by something else. Look ahead, so if a pedestrian was to cross in your path of travel, you have that time and distance to stop.”
Pedestrian safety is also important as the weather gets colder, with snow and rain affecting the roads and pedestrians wearing darker-colored clothing at night.
