COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -On Monday, Colorado Springs Police say this week they will be increasing enforcement on DUIs through Halloween.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, (CDOT) El Paso County historically has been a leader in DUIs. In 2023, there were 1603 DUI arrests in the county and 21 deaths that involved an impaired driver.
“That’s really what we’re gonna be focusing a lot of our enforcement but not just on drunk and drug drivers but also on those with excessive speed especially in areas with neighborhoods and residential areas where we’re gonna have those trick-or-treaters out and about running around from house to house,” said Caitlin Ford, CSPD Public Information Officer.
Colorado Springs Police say they will have a dedicated DUI unit patrolling monitoring the roads to make sure those behind the wheel are alert and not jeopardizing the safety of others.
“It’s just not the risk you’re not only putting yourself at an increased risk for traffic fatality or a car crash but you’re putting everyone else on the road at risk with that,” said Ford.
“It just means that people need to step up their game and be a little bit more responsible when it comes to impaired driving. Plan ahead, find a sober friend do whatever it takes but never get behind the wheel impaired,” said Sam Cole, CDOT Safety Manager.
A law firm in Colorado Springs, Wilhite Law Firm, will offer reimbursement to those who use rideshare services to get home.
