Dodgers manager Dave Roberts played for Game 5 once the Yankees took the lead. He used four of his low-leverage relievers â Ben Casparius, Daniel Hudson, Landon Knack, and Brent Honeywell â to cover all eight innings.
Honeywell threw 50 pitches in the eighth inning and allowed five runs. But now the Dodgers have their best bullpen arms ready behind Jack Flaherty with a chance to close the Series out.

âAs far as outcomes, to have six guys in your pen that are feeling good, rested, I feel good about that,â said Roberts, who employed the same strategy in the NLCS when he sacrificed Game 5 to win Game 6 against the Mets.
The Dodgers quieted the crowd in the first inning when Mookie Betts doubled down the line in right and rode home on Freddie Freemanâs fourth home run to right field in as many games.
As Freeman ran the bases, Betts stood at home plate pumping his fists and screaming. It looked like 1963 all over again for the Dodgers, a World Series sweep of the Yankees.
Betts got fired up again in the bottom of the inning when he made a terrific leaping catch of a foul ball down the line from Gleyber Torres, only to have a fan literally tear the ball out of his glove.
The man, who was wearing a Yankees road jersey, clawed at Betts to dislodge the ball. Even for New York, it was over the top.
As Betts protested, right field umpire Mark Carlson quickly called Torres out for fan interference. The mugger was ejected and the game continued.
âIt doesnât matter, we lost. Itâs irrelevant,â Betts said. âIâm fine; heâs fine; everythingâs cool. We lost the game. Thatâs what Iâm focused on. Turn the page.â
In a 2-1 game, Hudson loaded the bases with one out. He retired Anthony Rizzo on a popup but Volpe was on a first-pitch slider and lined it over the fence in left field.

âI think I pretty much blacked out as soon as I saw it go over the fence,â Volpe said.
Volpe had driven in only two runs in the first 12 postseason games and had one home run in his last 49 regular-season games.
The Yankees are longshots to have another parade. But thereâs another game on Wednesday.
âHopefully when we win the World Series and Iâm with family, we can all reflect on everything,â Volpe said. âIt was just a big game. We just wanted to go 1-0 today and win today and see where it took us.â
Just insane for Anthony Volpe. From a kid watching the Yankees World Series parade to hitting a grand slam at Yankee Stadium tonight in the World Series to doing a post game interview with Derek Jeter about it pic.twitter.com/E28qWxJp8W
