November 5, 2024 at 5:23 PM Smith's successful run in Green Bay ended Tuesday when the Packers traded him at the deadline to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick.
Smith, a defensive end, has been a key contributor to the Packers defense over his tenure and leaves with 44 sacks during his time with the franchise — the sixth most in team history. But his playing time has decreased in 2024 and now the Packers will go younger at the position. Before the Packers signed kicker Brandon McManus last month, Smith was the oldest player on the roster at 31.
Smith's trade mirrors that of when the Packers traded Rasul Douglas in 2023 to the Buffalo Bills for a 2024 third-round draft selection.
Packers fans reacted to the trade with appreciation to Smith for his time in Green Bay while some were also confused about the return.
This is so sad
