The Honda Prologue, Via General Motors, Is The New Rising EV Star Challenging Tesla

It’s not easy to tell the difference between the Honda Prologue and Chevy Blazer EV.
That’s because the Honda Prologue is, in many respects, a Blazer. More specifically, a rebadged Blazer EV. GM makes the Prologue and provides key technology, including the Ultium battery platform, which includes the battery pack, electric motors, and chassis. Other major components are also sourced from GM. (I live in Los Angeles where both the Chevy Blazer EV and Honda Prologue have become instant hits. I see a lot of both. The problem is, telling them apart.)
Quick Rise
The Prologue has shot up from virtually zero market share at the start of this year to the No. 5 best selling EV in the U.S. in the third quarter, posting sales of over 12,600 units, according to Cox Automotive, right behind the also popular Ford Mustang Mach-E (as a number of media publications have pointed out). Throw in the Acura ZDX — which if not identical to the Prologue is similar — and you have Honda outselling the Mach-E in the third quarter. “Honda and Acura contributed more than 15,000 EV sales in the quarter, thanks to two new models. A year ago, American Honda EV sales were zero,” said Cox Automotive. That’s still a far cry from the No. 1 bestselling Tesla Model Y, which posted sales of almost 87,000 units in the quarter. But you might say that the Honda went from zero to sixty in under three seconds in market share speed.

Like the Chevy Blazer EV, the Prologue gets the $7,5o0 EV tax credit, making it a decent deal
The question is, will the Prologue continue its rise or will it plateau? Price might have something to do with the answer to that question. Because the battery pack and related components are sourced from GM, the Prologue is eligible for the federal tax credit. That’s a big leg up on the ineligible EV competition. While the Honda starts at roughly $48,000 in southern California, you can immediately shave the $7,500 credit off the sticker price (which many buyers use as a down payment). Some Honda dealers in Los Angeles offer another $3,000 off (as of November 2024), which brings the price down to under $38,000 before taxes and fees.
That price, along with the Honda name, may be enough to propel the Prologue to bigger and better market share numbers.
The Acura ZDX is aimed at the higher end of the market, starting at around $65,000. But it is also eligible for the $7,500 EV tax credit.
