Last week, we found ourselves scratching our heads at BYD Cars Malaysia’s post on its social media pages – which Sealion model is it? Well, it didn’t take long for them to answer the question for us, because its latest teaser has now confirmed that it was indeed the Sealion 7, and it might make its debut here in Malaysia as soon as next week!
The shadowy car on the teaser image provides just enough details to make out the BYD Sealion 7, particularly from its sportier bumper design sans a big intake grille, as well as the ever-so-slightly wider gap between the headlights and the C-shaped daytime-running lights.
Essentially a taller version of the Seal, the two models also share most of their design touches including the headlights, tail lights, and a similarly sculpted bonnet, but of course all housed in a coupe-SUV silhouette.
That said, the Sealion 7 does occupy a slightly larger footprint than its sedan counterpart, measuring in at 4,830 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm, placing it right in line with the Tesla Model Y – its direct competitor.
Outside of China, the BYD Sealion 7 is offered in two powertrain options: a single motor rear-wheel-drive variant offering 313 hp (230 kW) and 380 Nm, as well as a dual-motor all-wheel drive variant boasting 530 hp (390 kW) and 690 Nm – the latter enabling a century sprint in 4.5 seconds, a fact that BYD is so proud of, that they even included it as a model badge on the tailgate (like the Seal Performance)!
The BYD Sealion 7 is offered with a 82.56 kWh battery pack in Hong Kong, which translates to a claimed NEDC driving range of 567 km and 542 km for the two variants respectively. Interestingly, the BYD Sealion 7 gets a larger 91.3 kWh battery pack (82.5 kWh usable) over in Europe, which translates to longer range rated at 610 km and 550 km (WLTP).
