Joan Ballweg lives on Range Trail and was woken up by the sound of the crash on Friday night. She said she immediately called 9-1-1 and while on the phone saw the flames get bigger as the car caught fire.
“I felt sick to my stomach,” she said on Monday. “I’m still feeling horrible about the situation. I can’t get it out of my head as I continue to run through the whole scenario and continue to ask myself if there was anything I possibly could’ve done more to save a life.”
She said emergency responders were at the scene until 3 a.m. Saturday morning and that they told her there was nothing more she could’ve done.
“It just all happened so quickly,” Ballweg said. “It’s horrible and I feel terrible for the victims, their families and anyone else that’s involved.”

On Monday, people who knew the individuals killed put flowers next to the tree where the crash happened. They did not want to speak on-camera with WMTV 15 News, but said the weekend had been filled with grief and shock at the loss of five lives.
Sheriff Kalvin Barrett described the past few days as a devastating weekend on Dane County roads. Law enforcement also responded to a deadly crash near Windsor, while Sun Prairie Police Dept. reported a deadly crash near N. Bird Street and Vandenburg Street.
“The Sheriff’s Office alone responded to two crashes that resulted in seven fatalities,” Barrett said. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims who are mourning the untimely loss of their loved ones. Please give driving your full attention to reduce crashes and make our roads safer.”
