November 13, 2024 at 10:36 AM Tesla Cybertruck Hit With 6th Recall in 10 Months Tesla The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that 2,431 model year 2024 Tesla Cybertrucks are being recalled due to a faulty drive inverter. If the inverter fails, Tesla says, it may result in a loss of power to the wheels and increase the risk of a crash. It is the sixth recall for the Cybertruck this year. As of this story's publication, we're almost exactly 10 and a half months into 2024. Suffice it to say, six recalls in that time is an unusually high number of recalls — even for brand-new Tesla models. For context, the brand-new Tesla Model S was recalled just once in 2013, then one more time in 2014. As of today, the Model S has been recalled 11 times — but it has been on the market for over decade now and over a quarter of a million have been sold. It's a lot of recalls for traditional automakers, as well — even ones making their first electric pickup. For context, the F-150 Lightning — Ford's first EV truck — was released for the 2022 model year, yet to date, it has been recalled just three times. The Cybertruck recalls started on January 30, over a relatively minor issue with the incorrect warning light font size. Then in April, recall number two was announced regarding unintended acceleration due to a trapped accelerator pedal. Recalls three and four were issued on the same day in June; there was an issue with the front wiper blades failing, and one with the truck bed trim becoming detached. Recall number five came out in September over an issue with the rear view camera. The font size and rear camera recalls could be remedied by an over-the-air software update; all the others required a trip to the dealer. The most recent recall affects Cybertrucks built between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024, that are or were equipped with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) in the drive inverter. A fault in the drive inverter may cause it to stop producing torque. To date, Tesla is not aware of any collisions, fatalities or injuries related to this issue. Tesla will replace the recalled drive inverter with a drive inverter equipped with a properly functioning MOSFET component at no charge to the customer. Tesla dealers were to begin being notified on November 7; owners will be notified via letters that are planned to be mailed on January 4, 2025.
