A 65-year-old Phelan man died after he was struck by a car along Highway 138 in Phelan on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The driver also suffered significant injuries in the collision, which took place just after 5:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of the highway, just east of Sayle Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The pedestrian was walking in the No. 2 lane just prior to the impact, CHP officials said in a written statement. A 2024 Tesla Model 3 approached, with a 58-year-old Mira Loma man at the wheel.
"The driver of the Tesla did not see the pedestrian and struck him," the statement said.
Paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene, officials said. His name was not released Wednesday pending notification of family by coroner's officials.
The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries described by the CHP as "major."
