Pricing
The BYD Sealion 7 undercuts the Tesla Model Y, with a starting price of RM183,800 compared to RM191,000. But the real savings become apparent when you consider Tesla’s optional extras.
Want a colour other than white? Prepare to pay anywhere from RM5,000 to RM11,000 for that eye-catching Ultra Red. Larger rims? That’ll be an extra RM10,000. And that’s before you even get to the Autopilot extras. Enhanced Autopilot adds RM16,000 to the Model Y’s price.
And if you’re dreaming of Full Self-Driving, prepare to shell out RM32,000 – on a feature that still does not currently work in Malaysia. With all the options selected, the Tesla Model Y will set you back RM244,000 – and that’s just for the base rear-wheel-drive variant!
Performance
The BYD Sealion 7 Performance, starting at RM199,800, boasts a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that delivers 530 hp and 690 Nm, translating to a 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 4.5 seconds.
The Model Y Performance might be slightly quicker from 0-100 in 3.7 seconds and is slightly more powerful at 534 hp and 660 Nm, consider this: to get that Tesla Model Y Performance, you’ll be forking out at least RM280,000, that’s before you start adding those expensive extras.
For a head-to-head comparison, let’s look at the base rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y priced at RM191,000 and the Premium BYD Sealion 7 at RM183,800.
The base Model Y has a single rear motor producing 347 hp and 420 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Its 57.5 kWh battery pack provides a WLTP-rated range of 455 km.
