Tesla has further improved the motor skills of its humanoid robot Tesla Optimus Bot. The robot can now also move around in more difficult terrain. However, this is still a little bumpy at the moment, as a video on X shows.

Until now, Tesla's humanoid robot Optimus Bot was designed to be able to move on flat surfaces, such as in factories. However, the robot was not particularly fast. Tesla's engineers have now given the robot new capabilities that allow it to walk autonomously on different types of terrain in a largely stable manner.
According to Tesla, the humanoid robot relies exclusively on position sensors and compensation algorithms. The robot therefore walks virtually blind. The engineers have dispensed with optical methods such as 3D cameras and lidar – probably also in order to keep the costs of series production low later on.
In the published video, the Optimus Bot can be seen walking on bumpy grassy surfaces and in the forest, negotiating inclines and declines. In many cases, this works well enough for the robot to make progress without falling over. One sequence shows Optimus slipping, stumbling and catching himself again without falling. It is unclear how the robot reacts if it does fall over and whether it is then able to stand up again on its own. Tesla's engineers have apparently added parts to the robot to protect particularly sensitive areas, just in case. For example, the rear end of the robot is equipped with protruding pads.
Praise and malice
Reactions to the video have been mixed. Some see the progress made with the Optimus Bot as positive. In particular, the absence of optical methods to achieve a safe gait is emphasized. Others see the gait as too bumpy and are rather sardonic about it.

Tesla last improved the gear behavior of the Optimus Bot at the beginning of 2024. With revised, torque-controlled actuators, the robot was more stable and had a slightly smoother gait than its predecessor.
