A small, more affordable Model Y is coming to the U.S. in 2025, says an automobile intelligence firm.
This comes after a series of statements by Tesla executives about “affordable” models coming in 2025. As recently as the third quarter earnings conference call in October, CEO Elon Musk said, “we are still on track to deliver our affordable models starting in the first half of 2025.” Musk said more or less the same thing in the Q2 call. And recent reports point to a low-cost Model Q that will launch in the first half of 2025 priced under $30k with the federal EV tax credit or $37,500 sans credit. Tesla is also expected to refresh the existing Model Y next year, similar to the Model 3 refresh late last year.
‘Baby Y’
“The ‘Baby Y,’ a lower-cost variant of the Model Y, is planned to begin production in late 2025 alongside a larger Model Y variant,” said Sam Fiorani, an analyst at AutoForecast Solutions in Chester Springs, PA. Fiorani added that the Baby Y is planned for U.S. production. “Tesla’s lower-priced crossover is designed to fill the space below the $45,000 Model Y,” he said. “Depending on how much cost they can get out of it, the new model could rival the updated Chevrolet Bolt EUV for those entry-level EV buyers.” Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.
Currently (as of mid-December), the Model Y rear-wheel drive starts around $37,500 with the $7,500 federal tax credit and about $45,000 sans credit.
Tesla’s low-cost manufacturing crusade
Tesla has been on a crusade to lower production costs in an effort to beat the EV competition. “Just in Q3 we reached our lowest cost per vehicle,” Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla Chief Financial Officer, said during the third quarter earnings conference call in October.
And CEO Elon Musk said (during the same call) that along with Cybercab a manufacturing reset is coming. “It's worth noting, with respect to the Cybercab. It's especially not just a revolutionary vehicle design but a revolution in vehicle manufacturing that was also coming with the Cybercab,” Musk said.
