Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie today appointed his mayoral campaign and transition team co-chair, Ned Segal, as one of Lurie’s four “policy chiefs” who will work as deputies overseeing city departments. As the chief of housing and economic development, Segal will work on two priorities: downtown revitalization and building housing.
Segal is best-known for being one of several Twitter executives who were fired in late 2022, when Elon Musk purchased the company and took it private. Segal, who was the company’s chief financial officer, left with a severance package reported to be 25.4 million.
According to a press release about the appointment, Segal will “align the work of key departments” including those overseeing building inspection, planning, economic and workforce development, housing and community development, the arts commission, libraries, and the airport.
The mayor-elect underscored Segal’s experience in the private sector. “With his strong background in the private sector, a deep love for San Francisco backed by extensive civic engagement, and a track record of delivering results,” Lurie said in the press release. “Ned is uniquely positioned to lead the revitalization of downtown, accelerate housing production, and drive economic growth in our City.”
Segal also serves on the board of Tipping Point Community, the nonprofit grantmaking organization that was founded by Lurie. Segal began his career at Goldman Sachs where he worked as head of global software investment banking, among other things.
This is Lurie’s second announcement of key positions at his administration. Last week, he rolled out the first batch: longtime former San Francisco Giants executive Staci Slaughter as chief of staff, his mayoral campaign senior advisor Matthew Goudeau as deputy chief of staff, and his campaign manager, Han Zou, as director of public affairs.
This live page will continue to update as Lurie rolls out more details about his administration. Check back (and scroll down) for a record of the comings and goings at the major city departments and the mayor’s office, as they happen.
