In 2019, Elon Musk unveiled a concept Cybertruck that aimed to present a more environmentally friendly option to gas-guzzling pickups. At the time, the Tesla CEO announced the vehicle would cost a little less than $40,000 and would start production in 2021.
This target production date was eventually pushed back, while the starting price was pushed up.
Tesla held a delivery event in late 2023, where the company presented the first dozen units to customers. It also announced the prices and models it would be selling, as well as when they would be available.
Tesla increases Cybertruck prices by the tens of thousands of dollars
The single-motor rear-wheel drive’s base price was pegged at $61,000, and was said to be available in 2025. The dual-motor all-wheel drive’s base price was placed at $80,000, to be delivered in 2024, while the top-of-the line tri-motor Cyberbeast had a price tag of $100,000, and was also announced to be available in 2024.
However, in August of this year, Tesla stopped offering the option to reserve the cheapest version of the Cybertruck. The dual-motor model could be reserved with an even higher price of $100,000, while the Cyberbeast design also became more expensive at $120,000.
According to automotive news website Jalopnik, Tesla has claimed that those who bought units of the all-wheel drive and Cyberbeast models can receive their pickups this year, earlier than the announced 2025 delivery date.
Jalopnik has listed the many problems faced by the Cybertruck since delivery began, and speculates that the sudden availability of the units could stem from buyers canceling their pre-orders given the number of issues the vehicles have been facing.
