Specifically, Tesla delivered 1,789,226 vehicles last year. At the end of 2023, however, the balance sheet showed 1,808,581 Teslas delivered, almost 19,000 units more. In other words, Tesla delivered around 1.1 per cent fewer cars in 2024 than in 2023. Production also declined: while Tesla reported 1,845,985 vehicles produced in 2023, the figure for 2024 is only 1,773,443 units, a difference of around 72,500 vehicles or 3.9 per cent.
Tesla does not comment on the decline over the year as a whole in the brief announcement on production and delivery figures. “Thank you to all of our customers, employees, suppliers, shareholders and supporters who helped us achieve these results,” it says.
However, Tesla refers to the results for the fourth quarter, as 495,570 Teslas were delivered in the last three months of 2024. That is a new quarterly record; the previous record was 484,507 vehicles delivered in Q4/2023. Regarding production, however, the result is also declining here: 459,445 Teslas were built in Q4/2024, while the record (also from Q4 2023) is 494,989 vehicles.
The fourth quarter with the delivery record was thus a good one. However, it had already become apparent early on in 2024 that it would be difficult for Tesla to set new records for the year as a whole. In Q1/2024, a conflict on the Red Sea, which led to ship diversions and thus a lack of parts in the factories, and the arson attack on the Gigafactory Berlin had a major impact on production.
In terms of models, the usual picture emerges: the vast majority is accounted for by the Model 3 and Model Y duo. In the fourth quarter, there were 471,930 deliveries compared to 23,640 for the ‘other’ models (i.e. Model S, X, Cybertruck and Semi). For the year as a whole, 1,704,093 Model 3s and Model Ys were delivered, plus 85,133 ‘other’ Teslas.
Despite the decline, Tesla is still the largest manufacturer of electric cars internationally – albeit only by a narrow margin. With 1.79 million units, Tesla outperformed BYD – the Chinese manufacturer delivered 1,764,992 battery-electric cars in 2024. In the fourth quarter, BYD was already ahead of Tesla with 595,413 BEVs. And if you include plug-in hybrids, BYD is far ahead with 4.25 million cars in 2024.
Incidentally, Tesla expanded its quarterly report on production and deliveries to include storage installations (‘deployments’). In the fourth quarter, Tesla installed 11.0 GWh of stationary energy storage, the best quarterly result to date. In the full year 2024, the figure was 31.4 GWh – this alone shows that the final quarter in the storage business was outstanding for Tesla.
